Barcelona Day 9.

Well I am exhausted! While the metro may be a faster way of transportation, lately I’ve been walking to the places I have to go to. Today I walked to Passeig de Gracia and Placa Catalunya to celebrate Dia de Catalunya! Never before have I seen so many flags and so many people rallying peacefully for the same cause. Everywhere I turned there was a mustard yellow and red colored striped flag waving in the air or wrapped around someone’s back. People in every crowd would chant “In- in- independencia!” Dia de Catalunya was a day where the people of Catalonia remembered the day they lost their independence to Spain, but also a day where they brought awareness to the fact that they are seeking independence from Spain. Because of this protest, the Catalan people joined hands and spread out to the borders of Catalonia. Thousands and thousands of people, not only in Catalonia, but around the world, stood up and used this opportunity to fight for Catalonian independence. I saw t-shirts that read “Keep Calm and Speak Catalan” and even “Catalunya is not Spain”. These people were so passionate, and I’m so glad to have been able to witness this demonstration! Though back home September 11th holds a completely different meaning, it was fascinating to see this day used as a day of strength and determination for the people of Catalonia. I’m interested to discover the next difference this city has in comparison to back home! Adios!
